In the middle of the Aug. 9 downpour, Colleton County Fire-Rescue personnel were called on to battle a residential fire on Cocoa Drive. The call sending firefighters to 281 Cocoa Drive, where a singlewide mobile home was ablaze, came into emergency dispatch Aug. 9 at 7:31 p.m. The call came in while Fire-Rescue crews were dispersed throughout the county handling multiple incidents due to heavy rains, high winds and lightning. The first engine arrived to find smoke showing from all sides of the home. Firefighter-paramedics made entry through the front door and found one room well involved. Crews quickly brought the fire under control and contained it to the bedroom, saving the remainder of the home and belongings. The bedroom suffered substantial damage. A neighbor is credited with closing the bedroom door when the fire was found, which kept the fire from spreading into the rest of the home. No injuries were reported during the incident. The fire appears to have originated in a wall outlet.
