Cougars fall in close game to White Knoll

On the road last Friday, the Colleton County Cougars battled back and forth against Region 5-AAAAA opponent White Knoll High School before falling 28-21. The Cougars had 208 total yards, 135 rushing and 73 passing, and held White Knoll to 94 total yards. The Timberwolves accounted for 16 first downs, while the Cougars were limited to 8.
The Cougars struck first on a one-yard run by Shykem Chisolm (Lance Calcutt, kick) to take a 7-0 lead with 4:10 remaining in the first quarter. The Timberwolves answered on a 24-yard pass and kick to tie the game.
In second quarter action, Trakell Murray scored on a 24-yard run (Calcutt, kick) to give Colleton County the lead with 10:28 on the clock in the second quarter. Back-to-back touchdown runs by White Knoll’s quarterback allowed the Timberwolves a 21-14 lead at the half.
White Knoll scored with 7:18 on the clock in the third quarter on a 32-yard pass and kick to give the Timberwolves a 28-14 advantage. In the final quarter, Colleton County’s Chisolm was on the receiving end of a 64-yard touchdown pass from Edwardian Stansel (Calcutt, kick) for the final points in the game.
Stansel was 3-4 in passing for 73 yards and a touchdown. Murray was 13-58 with a touchdown. Shykem Chisolm was 10-31 in rushing with a touchdown and 1-64 in receiving with his second touchdown.
Defensively, Jackson Morelli had 10 solo tackles and one assist and Jaden Smith had 8 solo tackles and one assist.
“It was a tough loss,” said Coach Coby Peeler. “The kids played hard. We have made improvements, but we must capitalize on chances we get in the red zone when they present themselves.”
The Cougars will travel to Region 6-AAAAA Carolina Forest on Friday Aug. 31 for a non-region match-up.
