The locally-based 10U Carolina Slammers earned a championship finish in a three-team bracket in the USSSA Bring the Heat Tournament held Aug. 11-12 in Lexington. The Slammers went 2-2 on the weekend but went undefeated in bracket play to earn the first-place finish.
Saturday, the Slammers were defeated by the Muddogs (15-0) and the Palmetto Storm (17-8). They rebounded nicely Sunday, earning a 21-15 win over the Muddogs and an 11-9 win over the Storm.
“In Sunday’s game, Michael Witkin, Henry Montgomery and Chipper Matthew all had a great day pitching and hitting,” said Coach Todd Litchfield. “Witkin got on base every at-bat and Montgomery went 6-7, with a walk, at the plate. Matthews went 5-7 with two walks. Also having a good weekend at the plate were Mason Owens, Galil Frazier, Calvin Brown and Gerardo de la Cruz-Lopez.
“Defensively, Nick Martin, Michael Johnson, Montgomery and Matthews all made some really great plays at key moments in the games,” said Litchfield. “These kids have worked hard on getting better at baseball and learning the game. They deserved this win. They make sacrifices each week to come to practice during the summer.
“I would like to thank the parents for their support,” said Litchfield.
The Carolina Slammers’ roster includes Caleb Barsha, Calvin Brown, Danziel Chapman, Gerardo de la Cruz-Lopez, Galil Frazier, Michael Johnson, Dalton Litchfield, Nicholas Martin, Charles Matthews, Henry Montgomery, Trip Norris, Mason Owens, Garrett Sarvis, Charlie Walker, Michael Witkin, Sam Witkin and Cole Snelgrove.
