Brabham earns doctorate in trumpet

Javian M. Brabham of Varnville recently received his doctorate in trumpet performance from Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.
He received his undergraduate degree in music education from Florida State and his master’s degree in music from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. He also studied at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.
Brabham has performed three times at the International Trumpet Guild, and in March 2017, he published an article, “Building Confidence: Tools for Teachers and Students,” in the International Trumpet Guild Journal.
A 2007 graduate of Wade Hampton High School in Hampton and the S.C. Governor’s School for the Arts in Greenville, he was a member of the Wade Hampton Red Guardsmen Marching Band, directed by E.L. Manigo. He was named S.C. All-State band trumpet performer three times and toured the Carolina Crowns Drum and Bugle Corps in 2005.
Brabham is currently assistant director of bands at Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga.
He is the son of James and Selma Brabham of Varnville. He is the paternal grandson of Gladys Brabham and the late Elder James L. Brabham and the maternal grandson of Lillie Washington of Cottageville.
