The 14U Badkatz went undefeated across five games in the USSSA Mid-Atlantic Championship held July 21-22 in Lexington. The team, coached by Tiger Martin, earned Rawlings backpacks for their efforts in the two-day tournament.
In game one, the Badkatz defeated the Carolina Impact 9-2 after scoring six runs in the third inning. The Badkatz’s pitching staff recorded five strikeouts and allowed three hits in the game. Makayla Chisolm and Izzy Cannon were 2-2 at the plate. Haley Bootle, Becca Martin and Morgan Walling had a hit each.
The Badkatz edged out the Carolina Hurricanes 3-2 in game two, thanks to a productive first inning. With two outs, Taylor Tomedolskey doubled and reached third on a single by Amberly Way. Whitley Weathers and Becca Martin both drew walks before Way and Weathers stole home. In the circle, the pitching staff notched four strikeouts.
Defeating the Carolina MoJo 5-2 in bracket play, the Badkatz scored late runs to take the lead. Chisolm, McKenzie Pellum, Shandi Brown, Tomedolskey and Way all singled and scored in the game. Brown, Bootle, Way and Chisolm recorded multiple hits.
Against the Carolina Synergy, Weathers earned the 5-3 win, scattering seven hits across five innings of work. Weathers struck out five and issued two walks. Cannon was 2-2 on the day and scored twice. Brown had an RBI triple in the third and stole home. Tomedolskey, Weathers, Martin, Chisolm and Mackenzie Pellum each had a hit.
In a rematch with the Synergy in the championship game, the Badkatz cruised to a 10-1 win. Weathers earned the win, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out four. Brown, Bootle and Tomedolskey all scored twice in the game and every player in the line-up had a hit.
“I am very proud of the girls,” said Coach Tiger Martin. “The bat bags are one of the nicest gifts we’ve won. I felt coming into the weekend, we underachieved in our last two tournaments with second and third place finishes. After those tournaments, we had a great practice with Coach Ashlie Layman from Spartanburg Methodist College and our 18U team. I feel like that was key to our improved performance this past weekend and the bar was raised. With that said, I was anxious coming into the weekend as we were missing two key players in Aaliyah Williams and Amberly Way (Sunday). We picked up Mackenzie Siegler from our 12U squad and Izzy Cannon. They both played great and were instrumental in the win.”
The Badkatz will be back in action on Aug. 11 and Aug. 25.
