WPD officer resigns after being charged with DUI

“The Walterboro Police Department was notified by the South Carolina Highway Patrol on Saturday July 28th in reference to a single-car accident involving an officer from our department. The officer, Captain Bert Sweat, was off duty at the time of the collision; however, he was driving his agency-assigned vehicle. He was charged by South Carolina Highway Patrol for driving under the influence and has subsequently resigned from his position at the Walterboro Police Department. This accident is currently under investigation by the SCHP and questions regarding the arrest and collision can be directed to their agency. The Walterboro Police Department will not make any further comments regarding this incident.”
