Candidates to fill three-and-a-half terms on the Colleton County School Board will begin throwing their hats into the ring tomorrow.
The filing deadline for the school board posts will begin at noon on Friday July 27 and run until noon on Friday Aug. 10.
This year’s election schedule began with the Colleton County School Board seats in the Second, Fourth and Sixth District races in the Nov. 6 General Election ballot.
Those are the seats currently held by Tim Mabry in the Second District, Darlene Miller in the Fourth District and Harry Jenkins in the Sixth District.
Miller, Mabry and Jenkins are completing their first four-year term on the school board.
The half-term made its way onto the Nov. 6 ballot when Gale Doggette announced she will be resigning from the Third District post effective in November.
Doggette was elected to the school board in 2016, winning a three-person race for the post. She resigned because she is moving out of the Third District.
Doggette, with an assist from Colleton County School Board Attorney Bert Duffy, orchestrated her resignation to ensure that a special election would not be necessary to fill the two years left on her four-year term.
Colleton County Voter Registration and Elections Director Angela Upchurch estimates that conducting a special election for Doggette’s unexpired term would have cost the county approximately $5,000.
