A Hampton man drowned at a motel pool the evening of July 7.
Colleton County Deputy Coroner Richard Carter said Rodney O. Stokes, 45, of Hampton was pronounced dead at the Emergency Department of Colleton Medical Center at 9:15 p.m.
Carter said the cause of death was listed as accidental drowning. Wayne Walker assisted Carter in the death investigation.
Members of the Walterboro Police Department were dispatched to the Baymont Inn at 1286 Sniders Highway on July 7 at approximately 7:40 p.m. for a medical emergency.
The first officer on the scene arrived to find two motel guests performing CPR on Stokes at the side of the pool.
The police officer joined the efforts to revive him until paramedics from Colleton County Fire-Rescue took over the treatment before transporting him to the medical center.
A witness told city police the man went to the pool to check on the water temperature. He then saw the victim on the bottom of the pool.
Bystanders retrieved Stokes from the pool and began their lifesaving efforts.

Probably trespassing. Learn to swim people! Guarantee that alcohol and/or drugs will be found in the victim’s system.
