Man arrested in car theft
A Ruffin man was taken into custody shortly after he allegedly stole a motor vehicle from the parking lot of Colleton Medical Center.
A Walterboro police officer was dispatched to the medical center at 501 Robertson Blvd. on June 25 at 11:58 a.m. where a county-owned black 2017 Chevrolet Sonic had been reported stolen.
As the radio report went out about the theft of the motor vehicle, a Colleton County Sheriff’s Office deputy reported spotting the car in the area of North Jefferies Boulevard and Whittle Street and made a traffic stop. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
County officials reported that the suspect was not a county employee and did not have permission to possess or operate the motor vehicle.
The incident led to the arrest of Stephen R. Kooy, 29, of Ruffin on charges of motor vehicle theft and driving while under suspension.
Guns taken
from pawn shop
An employee of the Silver Dollar Pawn Shop at 1013 S. Jefferies Blvd. contacted the city police department the afternoon of June 26 to report that someone had taken three semi-automatic handguns from a display case inside the business.
The surveillance camera system was to be reviewed by the pawnshop personnel to determine if the theft had been caught on video.

Up on blocks
A resident of Augusta Highway contacted the sheriff’s office to report a theft.
The man sought the theft report on June 28, explaining that when he arrived home on June 24, he found his 1999 Cadillac Escalade up on blocks.
Someone had removed the vehicle’s tires and wheels, worth a reported $6,000.

Shots-fired call produces arrest
A resident of Bedon Road contacted the sheriff’s office about hearing gunshots in the area the evening of June 28.
A deputy sent on the call determined that the suspect was armed with a handgun.
The discovery led to the arrest of Jontre D. Wiliams, 19, of Walterboro on a charge of illegal possession of a weapon.
