The first community picnic gathering was held July 7 at the intersection of Grace, Chapman and Francis streets with Padgett Loop in Walterboro.
“A group of us got together and decided to get the community back together again and let the generations who are coming up see who we are,” said Roman Cunningham, one of the organizers. The afternoon included a walk around local streets, with older residents explaining to the younger generation who lived in each house and a little about the person in an effort to give them a sense of their community.
The committee — Cunningham, Theola Johnson, Lorenzo Cunningham, Melissa Davis, Revonica Daniels, Jackie Shider and Edward Russell — raised money to buy t-shirts and food to feed everyone in the community.
“We had a good crowd,” Cunningham said. “They said it wouldn’t happen, but it did. We had a ball — an awesome time. People are already asking when we’re going to do it again.”
