The Colleton County High School girls’ varsity basketball team split Region 8-AAAA games last week to move them to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Lady Cougars earned a 35-32 win over Hilton Head in Tuesday Jan. 16 at home and fell 49-42 in Friday evening’s matchup with Berkeley.
“Against Hilton Head, we started the game with a lack of energy or eagerness to hustle and play hard,” said Assistant Coach Briana Chisolm. “This caused us to start off slow, offensively and defensively. However, in the second quarter, the girls got themselves going, leaving us down 17-15 at the half.
“In the last three to four minutes of the game, we picked up our momentum,” said Chisolm. “Jade Frazier hit a free throw to leave us trailing 29-26. Then, with 1:35 on the clock, Scha’Mari Stephens hit a three-pointer. After a timeout, we put Hilton Head to the line and made it 31-29. With 35 seconds left, Kari Edwards hit a three-pointer to give us our first lead of the game. Then we got undisciplined and fouled, and Hilton Head tied the game 32-32. With 15 seconds left, Shantasia Allen came down with a huge three-pointer to give us the win.”
In Friday’s loss to Berkeley, Stephens led Colleton County with 14 points, followed by Omari Kirkland with eight points and Ashley Savage with six points.
“We have to finish games better and come out with more energy,” said Coach Perry Smalls. We are getting more out of Savage and Bowman, which is coming at a great time in region play. We just need to be able to finish these games, and that effort and drive comes from practice and time in the gym. I honestly feel those factors contributed to this loss.”
