The Salkehatchie Indians entered Region X competition last week by splitting road games. The Indians picked up their first region win against Brunswick Community College (82-64) before losing to Caldwell Community College (85-71).
Against Brunswick, the Indians led 36-29 at the half. Kelvin Pruitt came off the bench to score 15 points and capture four rebounds and lead the Indians on the board. Marques Sumner scored 14 points and recorded 10 rebounds for a double-double. Maxwell Benoit had 13 points with three rebounds and Deshaw Andrews had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Saturday’s loss to Caldwell saw the Indians trailing 33-32 at the half. Sumner led Salkehatchie with 17 points and five rebounds, while Benoit added 14 points and Reggie Wright had 13 of his own.
“We opened region play with a great win against Brunswick and a tough loss at Caldwell,” said Coach Jake Williams. “A lot to learn and build on, certainly. We need everyone to come out and support us and set the tone and atmosphere for the home region games.”
The Indians were scheduled to host Denmark on Wednesday Jan. 24 when they will look to continue their 25 home-win streak in front of a packed house.
