The Colleton County Cougars (13-5, 3-1) earned a Region 8-AAAA win over the visiting Hilton Head Seahawks by a final score of 71-58 last Tuesday Jan. 16. They fell short Friday evening against Berkeley, 59-47, in front of a home crowd.
Nyeem Green recorded 26 points in the win over the Seahawks along with grabbing 14 rebounds and four assists. He was named Player of the Game for his efforts. Tristian Nieves had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
“We were inconsistent against Hilton Head on defense in the first half of the game,” said Coach Jacob Smith. “After the half, we made some adjustments and our defense created some easier baskets in the second half.”
Against the No. 4 ranked AAAA Berkeley team, the Cougars allowed unforced turnovers to be a deciding factor in the battle. Nieves led Colleton County with 16 points, eight rebounds, four assists and one steal. Green added 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and De’Iajae Ferguson recorded 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and one steal.
“I informed the team to beat the good teams, you cannot turn the ball over,” said Smith. “We are one game behind Berkeley, so the next six games are very important to secure home court advantage for the first round of playoffs. We still have an opportunity to compete for the region championship. We will play a much-improved Stall High School this week that is benefitting from a few quality transfer players, then we enter the second half of region play against Cane Bay on Friday.”
The Cougars were scheduled to travel to Stall High School Tuesday Jan. 23 and Cane Bay High School on Friday Jan. 26 in important Region 8-AAAA matchups.
