The Colleton Prep War Hawks saw the season come to an end Friday evening in the 49-20 loss to Pee Dee Academy in round one of the SCISA Class A football playoffs in Mullins.
Colleton Prep scored first in Friday’s game on a 35-yard touchdown run by Gabe Barnes to take an 8-0 lead. CPA’s quarterback Fisher Jackson closed out the first quarter with a 63-yard run to tie the game at 14-14. The Golden Eagles scored three times in the second quarter to leave the War Hawks trailing 35-14 at the half.
It was a defensive battle in the third period with Colleton Prep scoring the only points in the quarter on a Barnes 3-yard run. Pee Dee scored twice in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach and eliminate the War Hawks from post-season play.
Fisher Jackson recorded 140 yards and scored two touchdowns in the game. Gabe Barnes had 72 yards and one touchdown.
“The game snowballed quick on our mistakes in the first half,” said Coach Rob Gorrell. “I thought we came out strong and executed, forcing a three-and-out on their first possession, then scoring on a Gabe Barnes 35-yard touchdown run to go up 8-0. A touchdown and fumble on our kick return and we were down 14-8 quickly. Another fumble and a pick-six and it was 35-14 at halftime.
“They are a very good and very well coached football team,” he said. “It’s fun to compete against them. We have had three good games since I’ve been here. I was proud of the effort once again from our guys. They’re a very athletic team that likes to throw the ball around which is definitely our weakness.
“It was not the season we wanted, but the kids never quit,” he said. “Never made excuses about injuries, etc. We are going to miss the seniors. Obviously not how they wanted to go out, but they won a lot of football games in their careers. I am extremely proud of all of them.”
