The Colleton County Lady Cougars varsity basketball team hosted a six-team scrimmage on Saturday to open the winter season. Along with Colleton County, participants in the all-day scrimmage included Lake Marion High School, Bluffton, Whale Branch, Battery Creek and Estill.
The Lady Cougars went 2-1 on the day, picking up wins over Whale Branch (16-4) and Battery Creek (11-6) and took a loss against Bluffton (11-6). All scrimmage games were 16 minutes with a non-stop clock until the one-minute mark.
“Overall, we know we have a lot to work on,” said Coach Perry Smalls. “We have to find a post player that’s going to work.”
“For our first scrimmage tournament of the season, our girls came out a little more confident in areas than what I️ expected,” said Coach Briana Chisolm, who joins Smalls as an assistant coach. “The biggest thing we have to work on is being disciplined on both defense and offense. Today showed us as coaches where our team is — and what we need to work on as a whole.”
The Lady Cougars are coming off of a 12-10 and 4-6 finish in the 2016-17 season, when they lost to Crestwood in round one of the Region 8-AAAA playoffs.
