The Colleton County Cougars gave the undefeated North Myrtle Beach Chiefs (11-0) a run for their money in round one of the SCHSL AAAA playoffs Friday evening in Little River. The Chiefs put up 342 rushing yards as a team and had six touchdowns from their junior quarterback Cason McClendon to earn a 59-36 win over the Cougars.

COUGARS NEVER GAVE UP
The Cougars never gave up in Friday’s loss, battling from start to finish. Colleton County scored its first touchdown 14 seconds into the game when Craig Grant connected with Devon Farmer on a 70-yard touchdown pass (Campbell Pryor, kick) to put the Cougars on the board first, sending shockwaves through the North Myrtle Beach stands.
The Chiefs scored the next three touchdowns before Grant hit Jovan Williams on a 15-yard touchdown pass (Pryor, kick) to make it 21-14 with 9:51 remaining in the first half. The Cougars went into halftime trailing 31-14.
Tristian Nieves kept the Cougars in the game in the third quarter with an 82-yard kickoff return and then ran in the two-point conversion to make it 38-22.
Craig Grant and the Cougars never quit in the fourth quarter. Grant scored on a 10-yard keeper (run failed) and hit Nieves for a 33-yard touchdown with 2:45 remaining in the game.
Colleton County finished the 2017 season 4-7 overall and 2-3 in Region 8-AAAA under Coach Coby Peeler.
“I am so proud of the way the boys fought and the strides they made this season,” said Coach Coby Peeler. “We are disappointed with the loss, but so thankful for the leadership the seniors have provided in helping us start down the road we want to get to. We grew up and got better — and we are going to continue to work and build.”
“We fought hard, but didn’t get the job done,” said senior receiver De’lajae Ferguson. “I came a long way with my brothers playing football. It was our first time making the playoffs in many years. I enjoyed myself. Nobody likes losing, but I feel like we left everything on the field from when the game started until it ended. I am going to miss playing with the boys.”
“It wasn’t the way we wanted it to end, but there is definitely hope again in Colleton County,” said Jalen Lawton.
“We had a great ride together,” said Craig Grant Jr. “I feel like we came a long way this season and stood shoulder to shoulder at the end. I hope we set an example for future years. In the end, I am glad I played this game with my brothers.”
