There will come a time very soon when three regional or national food service franchises will have new facilities under construction in Walterboro.
The national chain, Starbucks, will take up residence at the northwest corner of Bells Highway and Mount Carmel Road.
When that work begins, Starbucks will join the new Kentucky Fried Chicken and Cook Out. All three have all the required permits to begin construction.
Walterboro Deputy City Manager Hank Amundson, who heads up the city’s economic development initiative, said he met with Starbucks representatives on Oct. 10 “to hammer out some small details.” All the construction permits for the 6,200-square-foot Starbucks building have been issued, he said.
The business’s location, 1588 Bells Highway, is currently a vacant lot. Amundson said in the coming weeks, “We should see some movement there.”
The building will reflect Starbucks’ current business model in which a portion of the building will be occupied by Starbucks and the remainder of the building leased to another business.
Starbucks, he said, will get its portion of the building up and running before beginning work on leasing out the other portion of the building.
When establishing a new franchise, Amundson added, the company hires a construction firm to build the Starbucks’ standardized brick façade building and then brings in its own team to handle the finishing of the interior.
