Both Walterboro Police Department and the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office have filed criminal charges against an Orangeburg man.
The investigation began Sept. 29 shortly before 10 a.m. when a city police officer was dispatched to interview a woman, who was in a room at Red Roof Inn at 1288 Sniders Hwy., reporting an assault.
The woman in the room, according to the incident report, was shaking and crying with her left eye area bruised and swollen.
She said that her boyfriend assaulted her while they were headed north on I-95 in a silver GMC pickup on Sept. 28, just after the couple left Walmart and were heading for Orangeburg.
After the alleged assault, she said, the couple returned to their room at the Red Roof Inn. She allegedly told investigators that she was afraid to leave the room because she was scared her boyfriend would assault her again.
The fact that the alleged assault took place on the interstate led to the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office joining the investigation.
A deputy went to the suspect’s place of work and asked him to come outside. After interviewing the man and checking on the borrowed truck he was driving, the deputy placed Charles M. Westberry, 37, of Orangeburg under arrest on a charge of criminal domestic violence-aggravated assault.
City police added charges of kidnapping and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.
