The Colleton Prep War Hawks picked up their first Region II-A win of the season against Dorchester Academy last Thursday evening at War Hawk Field in the PRTC Bowl.
The 48-40 win for the War Hawks came on Senior Night and improved their record to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in Region II-A.
CPA scored first when senior quarterback Fisher Jackson scored on a 6-yard keeper following a 10-play drive. Jackson then ran in a two-point conversion to give CPA an 8-0 lead with 6:22 on the clock in the first quarter. The Raiders answered with a 60-yard touchdown run by Brody Marchant, followed by a successful 2-point conversion by Rhett Mizell to tie the game.
With 1:33 left in the quarter, Joe Bryan scored on a 13-yard run, followed by a successful conversion, to put CPA in the lead 16-8 at the end of the quarter.
It remained a back-and-forth affair in the second quarter, with both CPA and Dorchester scoring twice. Colleton Prep capitalized on both 2-point conversion attempts, while the Raiders were stopped short, leaving the War Hawks leading 32-20 at the half.
Dorchester’s Ben Murray scored with 3:15 remaining in the third quarter (conversion failed) to leave CPA ahead 32-26.
Seven minutes later, Cameron Hiers took it to the house for the War Hawks and Jackson ran in the end zone on the conversion play to give CPA a 40-26 lead.
The Raiders fought back in the fourth quarter, scoring twice (once on a War Hawk turnover) to tie the game 40-40 with 9:14 remaining. The War Hawks scored again to take the lead and Hunter Hudson intercepted a Dorchester pass to clinch the win.
According to CPA’s Head Coach Rob Gorrell, Fisher Jackson had over 200 yards rushing, including three touchdowns. Hudson led the defensive effort with eight tackles.
“I am proud of the overall effort,” said Gorrell. “I told our guys that when they play hard, good things happen. It was fun to see us play with some swagger and attitude, which helped us overcome a lot of mistakes. Obviously, there’s still a lot to work on, but a very good step.”
For Dorchester Academy, Lance Brownlee was 19 for 29 for 274 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for 39 yards and one touchdown. Rhett Mizzell had seven catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns along with throwing a 45-yard touchdown. Brody Marchant had six catches for 128 yards and one touchdown.
On defense for the Raiders, Jack Berry had nine tackles, while Brody Marchant and David Cleland each had eight tackles.
Colleton Prep will face Hilton Head Prep (1-6, 0-3) Friday Oct. 13 on the road.
