A Walterboro man lost his life when he was ejected from his pickup truck during a one-vehicle crash on Sidneys Road the afternoon of Sept. 24.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey reports that David Bell, 53, of Walterboro was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. He has listed multiple trauma as the cause of death.
Safety forces were called to the 7400 block of Sidneys Road, just north of Fleming Road, Sept. 24 at 2:30 p.m. and found Bell underneath his 1999 Dodge pickup truck.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Bell was traveling south on Sidneys Road when his truck went off the roadway on a curve.
His truck then entered a ditch and overturned. Bell was ejected from his vehicle and was underneath the truck.
Firefighter-paramedics arriving on the scene checked on Bell and found no signs of life after using a winch to stabilize the truck and a reciprocating saw to remove a portion of the windshield to gain access to the victim.
The area on Sidneys Road was closed for approximately two-and-one-half hours while the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated the accident. Colleton County Sheriff’s deputies rerouted traffic.
The location is the site of several previous fatal accidents.
