Mary “Libba” Flowers

WALTERBORO – Mary Elizabeth “Libba” Flowers, wife of Dr. Joseph Flowers, died Thursday at her residence surrounded by her family. She was 80.
Mrs. Flowers was born Feb. 27, 1937 in Brunson, a daughter of the late Julius “Jack” and Esther Hiers. She was a member of the first graduating class of Wade Hampton High School, and was a graduate of Columbia College. She taught in both public and private schools in Richland County, Hampton County and Colleton County. She was the 1954 Watermelon Festival Queen, and was a member of the Mayfield Terrace Garden Club, the Women’s Medical Auxillary, was president of the John C. Calhoun Academy Band Booster Club, and was on the Elaine Fogle Scholarship Committee.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Stephany Bates (Bob) of Edisto Beach, Cal Griffin (Prissy) and Jill Burttram (Tracy), of Walterboro, Cindy Cox (Don) of Bluffton, Joe Flowers, Jr. (Michelle) and Dianne Flowers (Tom), of Hilton Head, and Elaine Flowers (Ernie) of Cummings, Ga. There are fourteen grandchildren: Kadee Sloan, Ryan, Brandon and Phillip Muth, Jennings, Olivia and Jake Burttram, Callie, Gracie and Clay Griffin, Brice, Payton and Reagan Flowers, and Brandon Cox.
The family wishes to thank her special caregivers, Becky Linder Hart, Brittney Melton and Sara Scriven.
Funeral services were held Saturday morning, August 19, 2017 at 11:00 in the First Baptist Church of Walterboro. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 in the sanctuary. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Parker-Rhoden Funeral Home of Walterboro is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, to Colleton Preparatory Academy, or to the charity of one’s choice.
