The Colleton County Cougars linked arms to make their entrance against Fort Dorchester High School in North Charleston Saturday evening. The show of solidarity was not missed by attending the game, which was postponed from Friday due to wet field conditions. The Cougars tied the game early in the first quarter, but fell 55-21 to the No. 2 ranked AAAAA Patriots.
Senior quarterback Craig Grant Jr. completed 14 of 24 passes for 258 yards and one touchdown along with 14 rushing yards for Colleton County. Kicker Campbell Pryor hit all three point-after attempts, going 3 for 3 on the night.
De’iajae Ferguson caught six passes for 127 yards and one touchdown, while Jovan Williams had four receptions for 94 yards. Jahmari Johnson rushed for 16 yards on six carries.
The Patriots senior quarterback Dakereon Joyner completed 13 of 17 passes for 254 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver Daquan Simmons caught six passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, while Dorchester’s running back Drew Parker scored two touchdowns with 82 yards rushing and added a touchdown reception.
Colleton County recovered a Patriot fumble on the opening drive, but failed to capitalize on the turnover. Fort Dorchester then scored on its next possession in the game on a 4-yard run by Drew Parker with 9:07 on the clock. The Cougars answered when Grant connected with De’iajae Ferguson on a 29-yard pass (Pryor, kick) to tie the game with 6:20 remaining in the first quarter.
Fort Dorchester scored twice in the second quarter to allow them a 28-7 lead heading into halftime and added three additional touchdowns in the third quarter.
Tristian Nieves provided an offensive highlight late in the third quarter when he scored on an 87-yard kick return to leave the Cougars trailing 49-14.
With many backups on the field for the Patriots during the fourth quarter, they scored for the final time in the game on a 9-yard run with 10:32 on the clock.
Colleton County’s Grant added the final points for the evening on a 4-yard keeper late in the fourth quarter (Pryor, kick).
The Cougars (0-2) will travel to Ashley Ridge (1-1) for a non-region game Friday Sept. 1 with a 7:30 p.m. kick-off planned.
