The Colleton Prep varsity softball team saw its season come to an end following a 14-11 loss to Robert E. Lee in double elimination play during the SCISA State Softball Tournament this past weekend at Patriot’s Park in Sumter. This is the first year since 2012 the Colleton Prep varsity softball team will not be playing in the championship series. The Lady War Hawks finished 2017 with a 21-5 overall record and 3-1 in Region 4-AA.
The Lady War Hawks shut out Andrew Jackson Academy 12-0 on Monday May 8 as they took to the field to honor their three seniors: Penelope Tuten, Haley Wilson and Patricia Utsey. Wilson earned the win in the blowout affair, allowing just one hit, issuing a single walk and striking out three.
Meredith Ware had a big day at the plate going 2-for-3, with a double and a two-run shot over the center field fence. Langley Harter was 2-for-3 with an RBI and scored three times in the game. Anne Garrett Carter and Elizabeth Anne Dean were both 2-for-3 on the day. Also collecting hits for the Lady Hawks were Weslin Jones, Tuten, Wilson, Mollie Warren and Heather Davis.
Final Regular Season Game
CPA traveled to Hammond School in Columbia Wednesday May 10 for the final regular season game and walked away with a 12-2 win over the Skyhawks.
Carter earned the win from the circle in four innings, allowing two unearned runs on no hits, issuing two walks and striking out seven. Wilson provided one inning of relief, allowing a single hit and striking out two.
Penelope Tuten drove in six runs on two doubles to lead the Lady Hawks at the plate. Dean was 2-for-4 with 4-RBIs, including a double. Harter was 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored four times. Carter was 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Warren and Davis also collected hits.
SCISA STATE TOURNAMENT
In game one of the SCISA State Softball Tournament Friday evening, the Lady Hawks faced off against Carolina Academy and came out the 7-6 victor after extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth with a full count and bases loaded for CPA, Weslin Jones was issued a walk to plate Haley Wilson for the walk off win.
Carter pitched nine innings to earn the win for Colleton Prep, allowing five runs on six hits, issuing three walks and striking out 13 batters. Carter also led CPA at the plate with two doubles and an RBI. Harter was 2-for-4 and Ware was 1-for-4 with 2-RBIs. Jones, Tuten, Dean, Nina Mescia and Warren recorded hits.
Advancing into the winner’s bracket, CPA then faced powerhouse Marlboro Academy in game two of the evening. Colleton Prep was shut out 10-0 in six innings and recorded four errors in game. Carter took the loss for the Lady Hawks allowing nine runs, four earned, on six hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Wilson provided one inning of relief in the circle, allowing one run on two hits in the game. CPA recorded three hits in the game from Jones, Carter and Ware.
In a back-and-forth affair against Robert E. Lee Saturday morning, Colleton Prep came out on the short end 14-11 in an elimination game.
Anne Garrett Carter pitched four innings for CPA, allowing two earned runs on five hits, and issued a single walk. Ware entered in relief and pitched three innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, walking one.
CPA recorded six errors in the game and outhit Robert E. Lee by one (14-13). Weslin Jones was 3-for-3 with 2-RBIs and scores each time. Wilson was 2-for-3 with a solo homerun in the bottom of the second inning. Ware was 2-for-4 with 2-RBIs and a solo homerun in the seventh. Harter was 2-for-5 with an RBI, scoring once. Tuten, Utsey, Dean, Carter and Warren recorded hits in the contest.
