A 67-year-old Walterboro woman was rushed to the Trauma Unit at North Charleston’s Trident Medical Center Thursday evening after she was severely beaten during an assault at her home.
Members of the Walterboro Police Department were called to a apartment in the 600 block of Green Pond Highway Thursday at about 11:40 p.m. by a 911 report of a fight and the need for an ambulance.
One officer, knocking on the apartment door, reported hearing a faint voice on the other side of the door asking for an ambulance.
Officers made contact with the woman’s daughter and found she was covered in blood.
Officers found the woman’s mother laying face down on the living room floor, a large amount of blood and a broken glass vase nearby.
Ambulance personnel took over the care of the victim and, based on the state of her injuries, the decision was made to transport her to Trident.
Colleton County Fire-Rescue Chief Barry McRoy said the woman was in critical condition and additional personnel were assigned to the ambulance to assist in her treatment during the transport. Police officials report she was admitted to the medical center’s intensive care unit.
The woman’s daughter was moved from the scene to the police department to be interviewed, but then she reportedly had a medical issue and was taken to Colleton Medical Center for treatment.
After treatment the woman, Jannie R. Brown, 52, was arrested on a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and transported to Colleton County Detention Center.
The investigation is continuing.
