Colleton County High School hosted the annual Drug Free Classic Track and Field event this past Saturday April 15. Abigail Altman, Grayson Altman, Breanna Varnadoe, Megan Calloway and George Crosby earned first place finishes in their respective events.
In addition to CCHS, Allendale-Fairfax, Baptist Hill, Battery Creek, Beaufort, Estill, Fort Dorchester, Military Magnet Academy, Ridgeland-Hardeeville, Scott’s Branch, Summerville and Woodland were represented in the all-day event.
Beaufort High School finished in first place in the girls’ division with 136 points. The Lady Cougars finished a close second, recording 131 points. Other overall team finishes were 3 – Summerville  (106.50), 4 – Battery Creek (80.50), 5 – Scott’s Branch (65), 6 – Woodland (53), 7 – Estill (25) and 8 – Allendale Fairfax (24).
In overall finishes in the boy’s division, Colleton County earned fifth place with 65 points. Beaufort High School took home the championship in overall points in the division.
“I’m very proud of our guys in this weekend’s home meet,” said Coach Mathis Burnette. “It’s tough to show-up on vacation and compete. Jaden Koger was strong in each of his events and I really believe he could have won the event had he not had a misstep. George Crosby is steadily improving in shot put and reached his farthest throw of the season, and Jalen Levine set a personal record in the long jump. Also, the 4X800 relay team did well, considering it was their first time running the event.”
“I’d like to recognize Moe Simmons, Gus Gluek and Scott Wheeler for their tireless work to make our guys successful,” said Burnette.
