The first-grade classes of Salley Smith and Holly Hiers participated in a Historical Character Dress-Up Day on Thursday March 16 at Northside Elementary. Both classes were studying democracy during the third nine weeks in social studies and used the dress-up day as part of their history lesson.
“One part of the lesson was for the children to learn about historical characters who impacted American history,” said Hiers. “We learned about Martin Luther King Jr., Ben Franklin, Dorothea Dix, Mary McLeod Bethune, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Frederick Douglass, among others. The children then dressed as their historical character and told their classmates what they learned about that person. They had a great time!”
