The Lady Cougar varsity soccer team split a pair of region games last week against Cane Bay and Beaufort to finish 5-1 overall and 1-1 in Region 8-AAAA.
Against Cane Bay last Tuesday March 14, Colleton County earned a 4-2 region win over the Cobras in a fast-paced and physical game. “We were down 2-0 but came back to end the first half tied at two,” said Coach Danny Wiggins. “They had a player get a red card in the second half and we scored two more goals. I am so proud of how the team handled being down to come from behind for the win.”
Heather Dowd scored from just inside the 18 in the 34th minute of the game for Colleton County’s first point. Faith Allen then scored from a penalty kick to tie the game heading into the half. The Lady Cougars half-time adjustments allowed Allen to score the go-ahead goal in the 61st minute. She would find the net again in the 77th minute from a Heather Dowd assist after converting a corner.
In a 7-1 loss to region opponent, Beaufort last Friday evening, the Lady Cougars fell behind early on. “It was 6-0 heading into the half,” said Coach Wiggins. “We played harder in the second half and only allowed a single goal. I was proud of our effort in the second half, but we just didn’t show up in the first part of the game. It will be a different game when they come visit us.”
Heather Dowd scored Colleton County’s only goal from a set-play.
The Lady Cougars are scheduled to play two region matches this week against Hilton Head High School Tuesday March 21 (away) and Berkeley High School Friday March 24 (away).
