On Tuesday March 21, Mary Darmody celebrated her 102nd birthday.
Mrs. Darmody was born in Canada, where her father served in the military. But after he was killed in action, her mother moved to Watertown, Mass. to live with her sister, and that’s where Mrs. Darmody spent most of her life.
When she was 21, she went with a girlfriend to the regular Saturday night dance. All of a sudden, her girlfriend exclaimed, “Oh my God. There’s Bill Darmody.” He came over, and the friend introduced them. And they spent a lifetime together. “He was the best,” she said with a big smile.
Bill worked at the shipyard in Watertown, and Mary worked on Saturdays at a bakery, “selling all those beautiful cakes.” But then the bakery was sold, so she spent her time raising her three daughters and one son.
Two of the daughters are still in Massachusetts, her son in Florida. And one daughter, Maryann, lives in Walterboro where she moved after her husband retired.
Mrs. Darmody came to Walterboro to be near Maryann after her husband died about 10 years ago. She’s lived at PruittHealth for about five years.
And she likes it there. Her favorite activity is bingo. “I love bingo. I go every Monday,” she said. And she wins. Prizes are items like cookies, which she saves for the two small children of one of Maryann’s coworkers.
So what’s it like to be 102?
“Life goes on,” she said.
