Colleton Prep’s varsity softball team improved its record to 10-2 overall to remain 1-0 in SCISA Region 4-AA following non-region wins over Dorchester Academy and Laurence Manning Academy last week.
Against Dorchester Academy on Monday March 20, the Lady Hawks shut out the Lady Raiders 8-0. Haley Wilson earned the win for the Lady Hawks after pitching four scoreless innings of relief, issuing three walks and striking out four. Anne Garrett Carter started in the circle CPA, providing three scoreless innings of work, issuing one walk and striking out two batters.
Offensively, the Lady Hawks had six hits in the game, including a double by Carter. Elizabeth Anne Dean was 3-for-3 at the plate, with 2-RBI’s and scoring once. Also providing hits were Langley Harter and Weslin Jones.
CPA held on for a 5-4 win over defending SCISA AAA state champion Laurence Manning on Tuesday March 21 at home. The Lady Hawks jumped out to a 5-0 led after three innings, but LMA would chip away in the 4-6th innings to come within a run. Anne Garrett Carter went the distance for the Lady Hawks in a complete seven-inning win. Carter allowed two earned runs on four hits, issuing four walks and fanning six in the contest.
Weslin Jones saved the day on defense when she made a diving catch at short in the top of the seventh for an out and then threw out the tying run advancing to third. Jones was 1-for-2 at the plate and scored twice in the contest. Wilson and Dean recorded 2-RBI’s each, while Harter, Carter and Davis also had hits in the game.
“Anne Garrett had a stellar pitching performance against Laurence Manning,” said Coach Ken Wilson. “Elizabeth Anne Dean and Haley Wilson had two RBI’s each. I can’t say enough about these girls. It’s always good to get the win, but especially against last year’s SCISA AAA state champion.”
The Lady Hawks faced Region opponent John Paul II on the road Tuesday March 28 and will travel for a rematch with Laurence Manning on Thursday March 30.
