Personnel at the forensic unit of the Medical University of South Carolina used medical records Wednesday to formally determine the identity of a body recovered underneath a residence on Pleasant Grove Road on March 26.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey reports the deceased has been identified as Michael Riedel, 58.
Riedel listed the home, located in the 7700 block of Pleasant Grove Road, as his residence. The property owner reported that the home was unoccupied.
Harvey said the autopsy conducted Wednesday led him to believe that foul play was not a factor in Riedel’s death. Harvey added that the man had a history of medical issues that may have played a role.
The formal cause of death is pending the result of further testing.
On March 26 at approximately 11:25 a.m., Colleton County Sheriff’s Office deputies were sent to the unoccupied residence after the property owner called emergency dispatch, reporting that it appeared that a dead body was underneath the home.
The property owner, seeking a ladder to work on a neighboring residence, reported finding the home’s flashing pulled away and saw what appeared to be a pair of shoes connected to a body underneath the home.
Upon arrival, the deputy located a badly decomposed body. Colleton County Sheriff’s Office investigators and the Colleton County Coroner’s Office were notified and responded to the scene.
Harvey went underneath the house to handle the removal of the remains, which were transported to MUSC.
