Colleton County High School sophomore Tyrese Pressey earned the AAAA Lower State Wrestling title in the 182-lb.-weight classification in the SCHSL Individual Lower-State Championships held this past weekend at Chapin High School.
Pressey (34-2) defeated Stephen Desjardins (Myrtle Beach High School) 8-7 to capture the title and advance to the 2017 S.C. Wrestling State Championships to be held Feb. 24-25 at Anderson Civic Center, hosted by Westside High School.
Also qualifying to advance to the state championships was CCHS sophomore Wyatt O’Quinn, who finished in fourth place in the 126-lb. classification. O’Quinn was defeated in the final round by Ralph Inge (Cane Bay) in an 8-5 dual.
“It was an emotional weekend for our team,” said Coach Packy Burke. “We had several guys come within one match of being a state qualifier but came up short of their goal — in some instances, down to the last second. Tyrese had a back-and-forth scoring rally in the finals, scoring a reversal with 8-seconds left in the match to win his championship title. It was an accumulation of so many things coming together.”
Pressey is scheduled to wrestle South Pointe senior Cody Cathey (19-8) in round one of the S.C. Wrestling State Championships, while O’Quinn (32-9) is lined up to face Eastside High School junior Cruise Baker (38-4) in the 126-lb. classification. Weigh-in is set to begin Friday at 11:30 a.m. with the first match at 12:30 p.m.
“We would not be where we are now without the support of our school, community and our parents,” said Burke.
