The Salkehatchie Indians turned it up a notch on Saturday. Not only did Salkehatchie improve its home-win streak to 14 straight games, but also managed to hand the NJCAA Men’s Division I nationally-ranked No. 16 team, Spartanburg Methodist College (22-3, 7-1), its first conference loss of the season.
And, just to make it more exciting – they did it in overtime.
Saturday’s win over Region X leader, SMC, improves the Indians record to 16-10 overall and 6-4 in conference play. However, three conference losses earlier this month have left Salkehatchie sitting in the No. 4 spot in Region X.
Against Spartanburg Methodist, the Indians trailed 51-38 at the half, but rallied back to tie the game at 102 as regulation expired. Salkehatchie slipped past the Pioneers in overtime to win 124-117.
Deshawn Andrews led with 32 points and 10 rebounds. Vernon Lowndes had 29 points and 14 rebounds, while Jami Sanders added 24 points and 3 rebounds. Also scoring: Reggie Wright 15, Marques Sumner 7, AJ Brooks 6, Rylie Owens 6, Jahlin Smith 3 and Eric Manigualt 2.
Earlier in February, the Indians lost three conference games on the road against Clinton College (104-102), Caldwell Community College (90-76) and Cape Fear (95-89).
The Indians have one region game remaining against Denmark Tech, scheduled to be played Wednesday Feb. 15 in a 7 p.m. tip-off and a non-region game Saturday against Red Star Academy at 4 p.m. Both games are home, meaning the Indians will be looking to add to their home-win streak.
