The Salkehatchie Indians have utilized the first weeks of 2017 to prepare for a strong run in Region X competition. In front of a large home crowd Saturday afternoon, Salkehatchie earned a win over Caldwell Community College, to improve their record to 13-7 overall and 3-1 in Region X.
Saturday’s win moved the Indians to the No. 3 spot in Region X standings behind Spartanburg Methodist (No. 1) and Cape Fear Community College (No. 2). So far, the Indians have proven themselves to be perfect at home, compiling an 11-0 record. They are averaging 68 points and 32.4 rebounds per game.
In January, the Indians have earned wins over TAAG Academy (96-89), Brunswick Community College (75-69), Denmark Tech (73-68) and most recently, Caldwell Community College (76-73). Salk recorded losses against Wallace State (62-59), Snead State (84-80) and conference opponent Spartanburg Methodist (93-72).
Currently, Vernon Lowndes (sophomore, guard) is ranked at No. 2 on the Region X Individual Offensive Leaderboard, averaging 18.8 points per game. He is also in the No. 4 spot in the conference in rebounds, averaging 7.2 per game.
The Indians are scheduled for two conference home games this week including a Wednesday Jan. 25 game against Cape Fear at 6:30 p.m. and a Sunday Jan. 29 game versus Brunswick with a 2 p.m. tip-off.
