Ghouls, goblins and other characters invaded Cottageville Elementary School last Wednesday for “A Celebration of Literacy.”
A variety of costumed characters, as well as public officials, traveled to the school to read to the students. Readers included Omar Jeter and the “You”niverse Project, Arylias Nova, MUSC Safety Officer Craig Crosby, Karen Minnis, Jerry Edens, Walterboro Police Department Officer Amy Stivender, Mary M. Horace and Lt. Jodi Taylor of the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.
Grades K-2 had a “literacy treasure hunt” while grades 3-5 participated in “Everyone Has a Story,” using a template to find different stories from people in their school. All completing the projects had their class’ name entered in a drawing for prizes.
Author Arylias Nova gave a presentation for grades 3-5 in the cafeteria, followed by “Literacy Element Bingo” during lunch. In the afternoon, grades 3-5 held Celebrity Games in the parking lot, which included a relay race to finish a sentence.
Parents were also invited to come and eat lunch with their students.
