The City of Walterboro and the Colleton Museum, Farmers Market & Commercial Kitchen will sponsor a new festival in Walterboro next week on Nov. 9-14.
FestiVELO, a USA Cycling sanctioned festival, will be held at the Colleton Museum, Farmers Market & Commercial Kitchen with bicyclists riding daily routes stretching across Colleton County from Lodge to Green Pond. Each morning and evening, meals and events will be held at the Colleton Museum & Farmers Market.
Approximately 350 cyclists are registered to participate in the event. “I want to make sure we provide a safe and welcoming environment for our guests as they visit Walterboro and Colleton County,” said Tourism Director Michelle Strickland.
There are the four things a motorist needs to understand about cycling rights on S.C. roadways:
- A person riding a bicycle upon a roadway must be granted all of the rights and is subject to all of the duties applicable to the driver of a vehicle.
- Every bicyclist operating a bicycle upon a roadway shall ride as near to the right side of the roadway as practicable. A bicyclist may, but is not required to, ride on the shoulder of the roadway.
- A driver of a motor vehicle must, at all times, maintain a safe operating distance between the motor vehicle and a bicycle.
- It is unlawful to harass, taunt, or maliciously throw an object at, or in the direction of, any person riding a bicycle. A person who violates the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not less than $250 or imprisoned not more than 30 days, or both. This includes the honking of horns and yelling out the window (the most common forms of harassment).
