Cougar Baseball hosted a successful fundraiser this past Saturday at the Colleton County Recreation Center in what they hope will become an annual event. Newly-named Head Coach Jermale Paige, with the assistance of Cougar Baseball parents, held an adult softball tournament with the goal of raising funds to assist with expenses for the upcoming season.
Twelve teams descended upon the complex early Saturday morning and by midnight, “Powerhouse” was named the tournament champion after pulling out an if-game win. As a part of the day’s events, a homerun derby was held with Shane Lester earning the trophy. Lester managed to hit 5-of-10 pitches deep into the trees across the outfield fencing. Both current and past Cougars participated in the derby with several managing to hit long *****.
“Overall, the event was a phenomenal success in bringing the community together in support of the athletes,” said Coach Paige. “We were able to raise funds to help offset the costs of the upcoming season. Our parents helped organize the event and obtained donations to make the tournament a seamless success. They served coffee, volunteered as umpires and played in the tournament themselves.”
Cougar baseball parents Wendy Lee and Jennifer Cox were on hand Saturday, as were countless other parent volunteers. “Throughout the day, many hot dogs, hamburgers, cups of chicken perlo were sold along with countless sodas,” said Lee. “As the day wore on, people came back for seconds of the famous perlo rice and hot chocolate to drive off the cold,” said Cox.
Cougar Baseball wishes to thank the following businesses and individuals for their donations: Colleton County Recreation Center, Airy Hall, Treasure Chest, Jus’ Sports, Mike’s Big Buck Corn, Chamber of Commerce, Griffin Jewelers, Lowcountry Vinyl, Crosby Lake Creations, Ernie Willis, H&H Electrical, Huddle House, Shoney’s, Save-a-Lot, Subway, Breland’s Country Store, Dukes Barbecue, Barbara Bennett, Waffle House, Piggly Wiggly–Beaufort, IGA, Cash and Carry, H&D, Captain D’s, Piggly Wiggly–Hampton, Triangle Ice, Ed Fitch, Fat Jack’s, Burger King and Olde House.
