Colleton County Middle School will be a bee hive of activity Saturday as it once again hosts a regional qualifier for First Lego League.
Ed Williams, who heads the middle school’s after-school program and spearheads the work on the qualifier, said that 11 teams from the middle school and the school district’s elementary schools participating in the local qualifier will be joined by approximately 14 other teams from throughout the region.
The competition offers the chance to build a robot and design the software to have it perform various tasks that drive the students’ interest in ACEbotics, the local program. But, in actuality, it is a whole lot more.
Williams explained that the program gives the students an opportunity to develop and enhance their math and science skills, as well as their software skills.
It is about learning and implementing the core values identified in the program, about researching a subject and putting that information together in a written report, about gaining confidence in public speaking, about teamwork, about respect, he said.
The qualifier begins at 8 a.m.
