The Colleton County Lady Cougar varsity and JV basketball teams held a preseason scrimmage this past Saturday at Colleton County High School. Five teams participated in Saturday’s scrimmage including Blackville, Whale Branch, Word of God Prep School (North Carolina) and Wade Hampton.
Under the direction of Coach Perry Smalls for the second year, the Lady Cougars will be looking for a fresh start in a realigned Region 8-AAAA. Smalls led a very young team to a 3-15 overall finish last season and went 1-7 in region play.
With his core players still in place, Smalls is hoping to see progression from his young talent in hope of making a run in the region. Several of his key contributors played throughout the off-season and should reap the benefits of their efforts on the court this winter.
“The girls are playing hard,” said Smalls in a recent interview. “We still need to find our post player, but we are shooting the ball well and playing good defense right now. However, we still have a lot of work to do and much to accomplish before our season begins.”
The Lady Cougars were scheduled to host the Cougar Round-Up Tuesday Nov. 22 where they played Allendale at 5:30 p.m. Colleton County will open its regular season Tuesday Nov. 29 on the road against Wade Hampton with a 6:30 tipoff planned.
Smalls will be assisted again this season by coaches Branshea Brown and Thea Campbell.
