Family Fun Fair, an event for families with children under five years of age, was held last Thursday evening at the Colleton County School District Annex from 6-8 p.m. Sponsored by Colleton County First Steps, the event provided books and diapers for approximately 50 families attending.
Along with the diapers and books, the families enjoyed pizza and snacks, puppet story time with Shiela Keaise from the Colleton County Memorial Library, face painting and other free goodies.
First Step’s Executive Director Cindy Dickerson said the event was the direct result of a study completed by Yale researchers published in “The Journal of Pediatrics.”
“The article relates the high cost of disposable diapers for low-income parents to reported symptoms of depression and anxiety,” said Dickerson. “According to the study, low-income mothers often experience symptoms of depression and anxiety. After reading the article, I learned about Jet.com, an online site which sells disposable diapers to nonprofits for 11¢ each. I began by searching for support to purchase diapers from Jet.com and was able to raise $700,” Dickerson said.
Colleton County First Steps, a nonprofit designated by the IRS as a 501c(3), was given $300 in gift cards by Family Dollar to purchase diapers from their store. “All these funds were used to purchase diapers and they were distributed to families at the event Thursday night,” said Dickerson. “We hope to be able to have future events and provide diapers at these as well.”
First Steps wishes to thank the following organizations for their support of the Family Fun Fair: S.C. Child Care Resource and Referral Network, Colleton County Memorial Library, SCDHEC–WIC, Colleton Museum and Farmers Market, Little Caesars Pizza, Family Dollar, Colleton County Arts Council, Molina Healthcare, along with their mascot, Dr. Cleo, and Coastal Kids Dental and Braces.
