A Thursday morning crash on I-95 claimed the life of a New Jersey man.
South Carolina Highway Patrol and Colleton County Fire-Rescue personnel were sent to the southbound lanes of I-95 near the 41-mile marker Thursday at 9:22 a.m.
According to witnesses at the scene, a Ford Explorer being driven by the New Jersey man sideswiped a tractor-trailer, went off the roadway and into the median, where it collided with several trees.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey said the driver, Lorin Swenson, 42, of Rochelle Park, N.J. was pronounced dead at the scene. Harvey said multiple trauma is being listed as the preliminary cause of death, but he has ordered an autopsy at the forensic unit of the Medical University of South Carolina.
A female passenger in the vehicle was taken to Colleton County Medical Center for treatment of injuries she sustained in the crash.
Colleton County Animal and Environmental Control employees were dispatched to the crash site to tend to the couple’s five cats.
The couple was reportedly in the midst of moving from New Jersey to Savannah.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still working on the investigation of the fatal crash.
