SNIDERS WRECK. An elderly Hampton woman was killed when her car left Sniders Highway and hit this tree.

A 74-year-old Hampton woman, critically injured in an Aug. 14 traffic accident on Sniders Highway, died as a result of her injuries.

Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey reports that Carolyn Clap, 74, of Hampton died on Aug. 15 at Trident Medical Center in Summerville.

Harvey said Clap died at the Summerville medical facility on Aug. 15 at 7:06 p.m. and the tentative cause of death has been listed as multiple trauma.

Members of the South Carolina Highway Patrol and Colleton County Fire-Rescue were sent to the 13000 block of Sniders Highway on Aug. 14 at approximately 6:45 p.m.

Initial reports to 9-1-1 indicated a car had left the roadway and struck a large pine tree, trapping the occupants inside.

Bystanders were able to force open the vehicle doors and remove the occupants. They then began CPR on Clap prior to the arrival of Fire-Rescue personnel.

Clap was in cardiac arrest when the first firefighter-paramedics arrived on the scene and took over the CPR efforts.

After firefighter-paramedics were able to regain a pulse, Clap was transported to the Trauma Center at Trident Medical Center with additional personnel on board the ambulance.

The male driver was transported by ambulance to Colleton Medical Center for treatment of his serious, but non-life threatening, injuries.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
