The 12U Swampfoxes participated in the USSSA Back to School Madness Tournament held August 20-21 at the ACE Basin Sports Complex.
The Swampfoxes earned a second-place finish in the tournament, going 2-2 on the weekend.
In game one against the Berkeley Gladiators, the Swampfoxes took a 12-3 loss despite Ryan Breland going 2-2 with two homeruns in the contest. Josh Caldwell and Warren Hunter combined on the mound.
“For the most part we played pretty good, but we had one bad inning defensively which cost us the game,” said Coach Frankie Kellam. “Caldwell and Hunter both did a good job of throwing strikes.”
Against the Klay Katz in game two, JC Poe and Michael Ortiz each pitched three innings in the 4-2 win. They combined for the win, allowing one run each.
Seeded in second place heading into Sunday’s competition, the Swampfoxes first faced the Summerville Thunder. Trailing by three runs heading into the bottom of the sixth, they rallied back and then earned a 6-5 win on a single from the hot bat of Ryan Breland to score JC Poe.
For the championship, the Swampfoxes played the Lowcountry Crusaders from Hilton Head. With a four-run lead heading into the last inning, the Swampfoxes’ pitching gave way for a Crusaders’ come-from-behind 9-8 win.
“Both Poe and Ortiz pitched well,” said Kellam. “Unfortunately, we ran out of pitching and the Crusaders came back.”
Kellam called the first tournament for the newly formed 12U team a great effort by everyone. “Overall, it was a very good tournament for our first time out,” said Kellam. “I am very proud of the effort the boys gave. Charlie Sauls, Sam Felix and Julian Snelgrove all did a nice job catching for us this weekend. West Brown and Jim Bob Hadwin played very solid defense, while Matthew Hooker and Ryan Breland had a good weekend at the plate.”
The Swampfox roster for the weekend included: Michael Ortiz, JC Poe, Ryan Breland, Warren Hunter, Charlie Sauls, Sam Felix, Jim Bob Hadwin, Matthew Hooker, West Brown, Julian Snelgrove and Josh Caldwell. They are coached by Kellam, Brad Johnson, Brent Hunter, Randy Caldwell and Lonnie Snelgrove.
