The Carolina Cougars went 4-0 on the weekend to capture the USSSA Summer Slam Championship held this past weekend in North Charleston.
In game one, the Cougars defeated the Berkeley Gladiators 14-6 after jumping out to an early 7-0 lead. Ethan Bryan got the start for the Cougars, pitching four innings. He allowed four earned runs on five hits, issuing seven walks and collecting five strikeouts. Josh Craven and Jackson Morelli both pitched one inning of relief in the contest.
Kaleb Gibson led the offensive effort with five RBIs on two hits for the Cougars. Gibson doubled in the third and homered in the sixth. Tristen Hiott, Bryan, Lane Lee and Josh Craven all had hits in the game.
Against the Charleston Crusaders in game two, the Cougars earned a 4-3 win after exchanging the lead back-and-forth across seven innings of play. The Cougars go-ahead run came in the fourth when Lane Lee singled to score Alan Grym. Josh Craven got the win for the Cougars, allowing three runs over three innings. He struck out three, walked five and surrendered five hits. Alex Jones pitched four innings of relief.
Tristen Hiott paced the Cougars at the plate, going 1-3 on the day, with a homerun in the third inning. Aaron Fryar had two hits, while Lee and Jones each had one.
The Cougars managed to top the Palmetto Punishers, 3-2, on Sunday in a seven-inning game to send them to the championship game. The Cougars scored one run in the fourth and two in the sixth when Lane Lee doubled to drive in Gibson and Hiott. Alan Grym went the distance for the Cougars, striking out eight. He allowed one earned run, three hits and two walks across his seven innings of work.
In the championship game, the Cougars jumped out to an early 6-0 lead to defeat the Ducks 10-3. They tacked on three additional runs in the bottom of the third to put the game out of reach. Kaleb Gibson got the win for his team, striking out seven. He allowed one earned run, five hits and three walks over seven innings.
Josh Craven was hot at the plate for the Cougars, going 2-3 and scoring three runs. He singled in the second and sixth innings. Kaleb Gibson and Alex Jones collected two hits each, while Hiott, Henry Gibson, Lee, Fryar, Morelli and Grym all singled.
On the Cougars roster for the weekend were Ethan Bryan, Josh Craven, Josh Kinard, Aaron Fryar, Alan Grym, Alex Jones, Lane Lee, Henry Gibson, Tristen Hiott, Jackson Morelli and Kaleb Gibson. They are coached by Vince Connor.
