The Walterboro Darlings came out strong in their opening All-Star game at the ACE Basin Sports Complex Monday evening. With the 15-3 win over Bluffton, the Darlings advance into the winner’s bracket and will have a bye on Tuesday. They will face either Moncks Corner or Hanahan on Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.
The Darlings jumped out front early against Bluffton and aggressive base-running allowed them to tack on runs each inning. Bluffton could not find an answer for the Darlings’ defense, which performed like clockwork early in the game.
“We worked hard on base-running at practice,” said head coach Chris Holmes. “I have a rule at practice, if you don’t run the bases right, you run around the fence. I want them to be smart on the bases. I think all the girls did a great job tonight on both offense and defense. We have a lot of little things to iron out, but other than that, I think they did pretty well for their first All-Star game.”
Holmes plans on coming out strong Wednesday evening, regardless of which opponent his team faces. “I haven’t seen Moncks Corner play yet, but I know Hanahan is strong defensively,” said Holmes. “They have strong bats in the line-up. So either way, it is going to be a battle. But I believe my girls are up for the challenge. I believe in all 12 girls that I have in my dugout.”
