The Colleton Prep Lady Hawk Softball team went undefeated through bracket play in the Class A Lower Bracket of the State Tournament; capturing the Lower State title. They are set to begin a best-of-three series today, versus Holly Hill Academy, for the Class A State Championship.

Colleton Prep will travel to Holly Hill today, for a 6 p.m. first pitch and will host the Raiders tomorrow for a 5:30 start. Should the series split between the two teams, the “if necessary” game would be played at a neutral site on Wednesday. Earlier this season, Colleton Prep defeated Holly Hill twice, 11-1 and 5-2.

Coach Mallory Crawford will be leading her Lady Hawks back to the Championship series following 2013 and 2014 titles and a runner-up finish last season. “We just have to play our game,” said Crawford. “We’ve beaten Holly Hill twice this year, but that doesn’t make it automatic. I told the girls they each have a responsibility to the team and to focus on doing the best they can. We have to rely on each other and keep our heads in the game. It is going to be loud and emotions can run amuck in big games like this.”

Over the weekend, CPA played in a field of Class A participants that included Wardlaw Academy, W.W. King, Andrew Jackson and Conway Christian in the Lower Bracket and Patrick Henry, St. John’s Christian, Richard Winn and Curtis Baptist in the Upper Bracket. The Lady Hawks defeated Wardlaw in a nail-biter (2-1), came from behind to beat Dorchester Academy (6-5) and pounded Richard Winn offensively (11-1).

Against Wardlaw Academy on Friday evening, both teams had five hits in the game. Colleton Prep had five errors, which contributed to the 1-0 Wardlaw lead at the bottom of the fourth, and stranded runners in the third and fourth. Meredith Ware hit a double off the fence in the top of the sixth, to plate Lexie Murray and tie the game. Mollie Warren came through with a big hit to advance Langley Harter, who was in to pinch run for Ware, to third. Summer Gerard, going with the pitch, scored Ware from third, on a sacrifice fly, to win the game.

Anne Garrett Carter earned the win against Wardlaw for Colleton Prep, collecting seven strikeouts and throwing 17 first pitch strikes.
In game two, played Saturday, against Dorchester Academy, the Lady Hawks managed seven hits to the Raider’s six, in the 6-5 win. Ally Knight started in the circle for CPA and would strikeout four in her five innings of work. Anne Garrett Carter pitched two innings of relief, striking out two.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, CPA trailed 5-2. However, the Lady Hawks made a valiant come from behind finish to earn the win. Tuten would leadoff with a free base on a hit-by-pitch (Harter, courtesy runner), followed by an issued walk to Wilson (Warren, pinch runner). Knight then hit a hard groundball to the shortstop, who would misplay the ball, scoring Harter (Harter, re-enters as courtesy). Murray drew a walk, loading the bases for CPA. Meredith Ware hits a groundball to the second baseball, who makes an errant throw to first, allowing two runs to cross the plate and tie the game.

Lexie Murray would account for the first out of the inning, following a Warren hit on a fielder’s choice. With the winning run on third, Summer Gerard stepped into the batter’s box. The senior outfielder hit a groundball to the shortstop, who was playing deep-in-the-hole, allowing Ware to beat the throw home and score the go-ahead run to advance CPA into the championship.

For the Lower State title game against Richard Winn, Ally Knight earned the 11-1 win for the Lady Hawks. She would strike out four in the mercy-ruled five inning game. Lexie Murray had four hits with three RBIs and Meredith Ware had three hits with three RBIs.
