Colleton Prep’s Lady Hawk Softball team earned two region wins this past week against Holly Hill Academy (5-2) and Jefferson Davis Academy (12-2) to make them 5-1 in conference play. CPA dropped a 13-1 contest with Thomas Heyward in between their region wins.
Against Holly Hill Academy last Tuesday April 5, the Lady Hawks earned the win behind the combined pitching of Ally Knight and Anne Garrett Carter. Knight did five innings of work in the circle, giving up two runs on one hit. Carter closed the final two innings, allowing only one hit. Meredith Ware was 2-2 at the plate for CPA. Penelope Tuten went 2-4 and Haley Wilson was 1-2, knocking her second homerun of the season out of the park. Thomas Heyward had 11 hits and capitalized on five Colleton Prep errors in its 13-1 win over the Lady Hawks on last Thursday. Elizabeth Anne Dean and Wilson combined in the circle, giving up seven earned runs. Providing hits for the Lady Hawks were Carter, Dean, Ware and Knight.
In their second region win for the week, Colleton Prep defeated Jefferson Davis 12-2 behind the pitching of Meredith Ware and Knight. Ware pitched two innings for the Lady Hawks, allowing just one hit in her appearance. Knight also pitched two innings, while holding them hitless. At the plate, Ware was a perfect 3-3 on the day. Knight, Carter and Tuten were 2-3, while Lexie Murray went 2-4. Wilson connected for her second homerun of the week and third of the season.
Coach Mallory Crawford was pleased by the overall performance of the team across the week. “It was, overall, a good week,” she said. “Thomas Heyward is in a league of their own right now, but we got two more region wins, which is what we’re focusing on right now. We’re still working on good pitch selection and cutting the defensive errors down. We’re improving – but still have more to work on. We have three region games this week, so it will be a very important week which will require a lot of focus.”
The Lady Hawks are now 10-6 overall and 5-1 in region play.
