Wanted: Ten Colleton County students who want a $5,000 scholarship to attend S.C. State University this fall.
The Dr. Harold Powell Endowed Scholarship Fund has $50,000 to distribute to students this year. The funds are from a foundation established by the late Dr. Harold Powell of Jacksonboro, who attended S.C. State before receiving his PhD from Penn State. He was one of the principal founders of the speech pathology program at S.C. State, which he headed for many years, said Ben Mitchell of the fund. “He took it from the group up to one of the top programs in the U.S.,” Mitchell said. After his death, a foundation was established to help Colleton County students who want to attend S.C. State.
The foundation has given 11 scholarships in the last five years, but this year wants to distribute more money, Mitchell said. Students must be from Colleton County, attend S.C. State and meet all admissions requirements.
Deadline for applications is June 1. To apply, see school guidance counselors or call Mitchell at 843-893-6732.
