SCE&G warns customers of new phone scams | News | The Press and Standard

SCE&G urges customers to beware of phone scams demanding payment to prevent immediate disconnection of electric or gas service. Customers have reported receiving calls that appear to be from SCE&G’s customer service number and even include a recording of an SCE&G employee speaking.
Scammers appear to be using SCE&G’s customer service number, 1-800-251-7234, by using caller ID “spoofing,” which causes the customer’s phone to display a false caller identification.
Customers may be able to distinguish a scam call by remembering the following about SCE&G’s payment practices:
- Approximately four days before disconnecting gas or electric service for non-payment, SCE&G mails a formal letter of notification to customers. • Two days before disconnection, SCE&G provides a courtesy call reminding the customer of the amount due and due date.
- SCE&G does not prescribe or require specific payment methods. Customers may choose from a number of payment methods: https://www.sceg.com/paying-my-bill/payment-options
- SCE&G does not ask customers to meet in person to provide payment.
- Bill payments are accepted at SCE&G business offices, by mail, authorized payment agencies, online or through SCE&G’s phone payment provider, BillMatrix, by calling 1-800-450-9160.
If a customer is concerned about the legitimacy of a call, SCE&G encourages the customer to hang up and call SCE&G at 1-800-251-7234.
“SCE&G may call a customer about an overdue account balance, but we never demand a particular form of payment or ask to meet in person,” said Sam Dozier, vice president of customer service for SCE&G. “If customers have any doubt whatsoever about the legitimacy of a caller, they should hang up and call our customer service line at 1-800-251-7234.”
For customers who think they may have been a victim of a scam, SCE&G recommends notifying local law enforcement immediately. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs also has a phone line for reporting consumer scams: 1-800-922-1594 or 1-803-734-4200.
