Announcement from Colleton County Sheriff R.A. “Andy” Strickland:
March 30, 2016 at 12 noon sharp marks a significant time for many local candidates who are coming forth to run for the office of sheriff.
Today I am making a decision that may affect all of the citizens of Colleton County. When I put my name in the hat almost four years ago, I made the decision to run as a Democratic candidate. Not coming from politics, I chose the party that closely resembled my beliefs and values at the time. During my term as sheriff, I feel I have done many things for this community not based on any particular party. To my knowledge, I can’t recall any Colleton County sheriff who has sponsored and hosted a community Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Trunk or Treat, Youth Summer Camp, Back-to-School Bash, and Summer Fun Water Events at many of the local apartment complexes. I have strived to reach out to our youth and community in many areas I felt we were lacking.
In addition to community events, our office has lowered the crime in our county. We have strengthened our community crime watch programs and currently have 25 in place. The sheriff’s office has been located in a temporary building in need of many repairs for the last 10 years, and we will now finally have a permanent office that is being built as a result of my perseverance and assistance from the county administration.
These are just a few things we have done for the betterment of the place we call home. As a voter of Colleton County, look back at the obstacles we have overcome and where we were when I started almost four years ago. We do not want to make a turn back in the wrong direction, as we have worked too hard to achieve the things we have accomplished. As the saying goes “if it’s not broke don’t fix it.” I am asking that you do not vote based on any particular party or the color of one’s skin, but on the accomplishments made for the betterment of our county.
During my previous campaign, I used an expression that life is like a card game: you can be dealt the best hand or you can be dealt the worst hand and come back and win the game. With the current situation at hand, and having four other candidates who are going to be running on the Democratic ticket for sheriff, I feel that it is in my best interest to run my bid for a second term as a Republican candidate during this election. This decision has been made with good conscience, deliberation and many prayers.
I have always said that I felt the office of sheriff should be a non-partisan position. Partisan politics has never played a role in anything I have done as the sheriff of this county. As sheriff, you do not serve one group of people, you serve EVERYONE the same, regardless of race, age, gender or party affiliation. Upon being re-elected as sheriff during the November election, I will continue to be a voice for EVERYONE. As a Republican candidate, I currently do not have any opposition for the June 14, 2016 ballot; however, when you vote in November during the general election, I ask that you remember where this county was four years ago and “Vote for the Person and Not the Party.”
I will always be Andy regardless of what party affiliation I hold.
Again, I ask for your prayers, support and VOTE during the 2016 election.
Sheriff R.A. Strickland
