The Colleton County Cougar Tennis team opened its season with back-to-back wins last week against Battery Creek.
The Cougars are under the direction of Coach Jeremy Varn, who is in his first season as the boys’ head tennis coach.
“It was nice getting our first victory against Battery Creek and I was happy for the young men,” said Varn. “I am very excited to be taking on this role, especially as a first-time head coach. I look forward to the opportunity and hope to make a difference. I want our athletes excited about being part of the tennis program and want to make the program competitive. It is my goal to win some games that people don’t necessarily expect us to win.”
According to Coach Varn, he approached the preseason practice a little differently than expected.
“We spent time working on footwork, conditioning, and tennis drills,” stated Varn. “I also put them in match-like situations which simulated what they would face in games. They had to compete and dig themselves out of situations that were not favorable.”
Varn will be looking to the leadership of Kenny Johnson and Charles Bailey during the season.
“Kenny and Charles are both fierce competitors and I expect big things from them, especially as team leaders,” said Varn. “Trey Bowman and Thomas Warren are improving and just getting better and better. Nick Fanchette, Joe Sanders and Trevor Owens are also showing much growth early on. Really, the whole team is working hard and improving each day.”
